Mary Ann (Ruether) Sommerfeld, 80, of Round Top, passed away Nov. 30 in Brenham.

She was born on June 16, 1941 to Charles Ruether, Jr. and Mary (Mascheck) Ruether near Ellinger. Mary Ann married El Gene Sommerfeld in a double ring ceremony Nov. 16, 1958 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fayetteville.

Mary Ann was a very devoted Catholic, wife and mother. She was proud of and adored her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family was important to her.

During her life, Mary Ann owned and operated her own hair salon in Austin before moving to Columbus, where she and El Gene managed the Wray Ranch once her parents retired. Then they moved to Round Top, where she and El Gene owned and managed The Sommerfeld Place in Warrenton.

Mary Ann enjoyed listening and dancing to polka music; singing in the church choir; quilting; and spending time with family and friends. In later years, she looked forward to attending and visiting at the Warrenton antique shows.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband El Gene Sommerfeld; sons Marvin Sommerfeld and wife Gwyn and Mike Sommerfeld and wife Julie; grandchildren Lauren Preston and husband Kevin, Kyle Sommerfeld and wife Yesenia, Carson Sommerfeld, Brandon Sommerfeld, Brooklyn Sommerfeld and Layton Sommerfeld; great grandchildren Keeley Preston and Nihan Sommerfeld; sisters Ludie Dennis and Joyce Muras; brother C.J. Ruether and wife Gloria; brother-in-law Mike Anderson; special nephew Danny Gerik and wife Lisa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Mary Ruether; sister Jeanette Anderson; brother Lawrence Ruether and wife Ozie; brothers-in-law Henry Muras, Lucious Dennis, and Daniel Gerik, Sr.

Visitation was Sunday, Dec. 5 at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus, with a rosary that evening.

Funeral service was Monday, Dec. 6 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fayetteville, with Fr. Steve Sauser as officiant.

Burial took place in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Columbus.

Pallbearers were Brandon Sommerfeld, Layton Sommerfeld, Kevin Preston, Kyle Sommerfeld, Carson Sommerfeld, and Stewart Kaiser.
