Nancy Kay Watkins Speck, 81, passed peacefully Saturday, Sept. 18 in Friendswood. Nancy was born in Houston to Thomas and Ruby Watkins and was later adopted by her parents, Johnny and Emma Leah Gonsoulin.

Nancy is survived by her only child, Gayle Lee Speck, Jr., daughter-in-law, Jennifer Smith Speck, two grandchildren, Lauren and Cannon Speck of Friendswood and cousin, Suzanne Gonsoulin Groneman of Webster.

Nancy was a longtime resident of Columbus. In her younger years, she owned and operated a small apartment complex in the center of town while also volunteering for the Colorado County EMS. Nancy found her career home at the Columbus Wal-Mart where she dutifully worked for over 40 years as a bookkeeper until her retirement in 2016.

Nancy and her dachshund, Candy, moved to a Friendswood independent senior living community to be closer to her son and grandchildren in 2016. She was a doting Grandma that always welcomed her family and friends with a warm smile, hug and “I love you.” Nancy was an animal lover and shared her home with many “fur babies” throughout her lifetime. Even persnickety pets found her lap of love irresistible. She was a collector of both ornate and simple things. This began with her incredible collection of Madam Alexander dolls of childhood. Nancy was a murder mystery/ crime genre junkie and could not get enough of CSI, NCIS and Criminal Minds.

Nancy’s family will be available and are inviting friends to the visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 311 N. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, TX 77546, (281) 992-7200, with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m., with Rev. Jerry Stark officiating. A private interment at Forest Park Lawndale will be held at a later date.
