Occasionally we are reminded that it is dedicated individuals who make that service possible. The Columbus Lions Club recently honored Doug Lilie for his 54 years of illustrious and dedicated service as a Lion with a Lifetime Membership Award. Doug joined the Lions in 1967. To put that in perspective, when Doug became a Lion, Lyndon Johnson was in the White House and he has been a Lion during the administrations of 11 different U. S. presidents. When Doug joined Lions Club, you could mail a letter for five cents, buy a dozen eggs for 49 cents, and fill your tank with 33 cents/gallon gasoline.

Read moreTurtle Wing Foundation is proud to award three academic scholarships this year to a high school senior or the equivalent thereof who resides in and/ or attends school in Fayette, Colorado or Lavaca counties. Applicants must submit a completed scholarship application along with an essay about why he/she is deserving of the specific Turtle Wing scholarship they are applying for. There are three scholarships to be awarded. The Jack Hooper Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student who has exhibited the qualities of Acceptance, Kindness, Inclusion, and Service. This might be through volunteerism, work or life experiences. The Grow Wings Scholarship is for applicants who must be actively participating in Special Education or following a 504 Plan. Finally, the Give Wings Scholarship is for applicants who are pursuing an education that will lead them to working with children with learning challenges in some way. Applicant must intend to further his/her education and training beyond his/her high school diploma at an accredited university, college or trade school. The winning applicants will be paid a one-time award of $1000 to be used toward tuition or other education-related expenses. There will be one winner selected per category. Applicants may apply to more than one of the scholarship categories, but may only receive one if select-ed. The winner may be asked to attend the Jack Hooper Day at the Ballpark and Homerun Derby on May 1, 2021 to participate in the opening ceremonies. Applications are available from all high school counselors, may be downloaded off the Turtle Wing website, or requested from the committee chair. Applications must be postmarked no later than Mar. 15, 2021 and sent to or delivered to the Turtle Wing Foundation.
