Another tournament means another stretch of impressive performances for the Lady Cards varsity volleyball team. This time, Columbus traveled to Schulenburg to participate in their tournament which featured each of the other volleyball teams from Colorado County. Columbus had some great performances during the tournament as they battled their way through the competition to finish in third place overall.

The Lady Cards took the advantage over the Ladycats as Columbus went on to win in three straight sets to claim the victory.
Read moreThe Rice Lady Raiders took their first win of the season early last week against the Hitchcock Lady Bulldogs in a threeset sweep that saw their offense take the center stage as they overpowered their opponents on the attacking side of the ball. Rice followed up their opening win of the season with a relatively tough performance throughout the Schulenburg tournament. Their offensive efforts didn’t follow them into Schulenburg as they struggled to create enough points to claim a victory throughout the tournament. Vs. Round Top-Carmine, L, 2-0 The Lady Raiders started off with a rough match against the RTC Lady Cubs as they struggled to get anything going offensively. Rice failed to reach double figures in any of their sets in the opening match. Defensively, they also struggled to keep the Lady Cubs from scoring quickly and frequently during the match. The Lady Raiders dropped their first set with only six points in a 25-6 loss. They improved slightly in the second as they suffered a 25-7 defeat.

After winning only three games last season and missing the postseason, the Raiders are looking for improvement at every stage of the ball as they come into a 2022 season that may have some higher expectations due to the return of head coach and athletic director Brad Dumont. Even if the improvement doesn’t result in a significant increase in wins, the Raiders will be looking for growth over last year’s team that allowed around 30 points per game and scored under 19 points per game while finishing next to last in the district standings.

They performed well enough during pool play to secure a spot in the silver bracket, the next four teams outside of the top four. However, a few tough matches outside of pool play led Weimar to take fourth place in the final silver bracket standings.

Weimar finished with a 2-8 record and went winless in district play, claiming the last-place spot in the district. Weimar will have a lot they’d like to improve on from last year as they scored less than nine points per game on the offense and allowed nearly 40 points per game defensively.
