Cub Scouts take top spots at district race
BRENHAM – Cub Scout Pack 312 was well represented at the district race on Feb. 17. There were 45 derby racers in attendance with George Bergfeld, Jr. taking 1st place in Webelos and 4th place overall.

DPS honors achievements and bravery
AUSTIN – The Texas Public Safety Commission, along with Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw, presented two William P. Clements Excellence Awards along with several Lifesaving Awards, a Director’s Award and one Unit Citation, at the PSC meeting on Thursday, Feb. 15, at the DPS Headquarters in Austin.

Hermann Sons Life insurance agent Mary K. Seifert of Weimar was recognized as a top-selling agent for her sales production in 2023. Seifert earned membership of the Executive Club and was awarded a monetary bonus.

Church holds Black History program
COLUMBUS – As Black History Month comes to an end, churches, organizations and nonprofits in Colorado County have been celebrating in different ways. The First Church of the Nazarene hosted their iteration of Black History Month Celebrations with a program that featured poetry and music as they highlighted the arts created by African Americans.

A Better Columbus looks to increase community visibility
COLUMBUS – A Better Columbus discussed several ways to help improve the community with beautification efforts and community impact initiatives. At their Feb. 21 meeting, the ABC organization resolved to continue their campaign to get businesses to purchase and display flowers as they look to raise funds for future murals in town.

Columbus American Legion gifts scholarships after competition
The American Legion hosted an Oratorical Competition for Columbus ISD students to potentially earn scholarships for schooling after graduation. Columbus High School senior Alley Fitzgerald competed and was awarded a $500 scholarship by Columbus Post 383 Adjutant Herb Fish.

St. Paul Lutheran Church to offer drive-thru ashes on Ash Wednesday
COLUMBUS – The St. Paul Lutheran Church has found a creative way to allow as many people as possible to follow the tradition of Ash Wednesday to commemorate the first day of Lent in the Catholic faith. On Wednesday, Feb. 14, the church will offer ashes for mobile believers in a drive-thru line at the drop-off area of the Lighthouse at 201 Veterans Drive.
