Clifton Ray Hughes, 80, of Bullard, and more recently New Ulm, received his heavenly homecoming Aug. 16 after losing his battle against COVID-19. Clifton was born at home June 9, 1941, to Blanch and Condy “Dick” Hughes in Sweetwater. He was the youngest of four boys Bill, Wilburn, and Shirly. He attended his former school years in Sweetwater.

Although his birth certificate said Baby Boy Powers, at the age of sixteen, he was officially named Darrell Ray Powers. In his younger years, he was called Puny, but 88 years later, he was best known as Papa. Darrell married Marilyn Socha on September 15, 1956. Together they had five children. Mickey, Steve, John, April, and Stacey. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law Cam Graves.

After graduation, he joined the United States Air Force to serve his country and was honorably discharged on July 5, 1962. Having served at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC, he decided to move back to Columbus. Before retiring from the workforce, Clarence worked at the QP Grocery Store & Gifford Hill (gravel pit).
